When we first decided to do a glamping-themed shoot for the fall issue of Paprika Southern, we knew we wanted a location that didn’t scream Savannah or the Lowcountry (i.e., we were looking for a backdrop that wasn’t filled with live oaks and Spanish moss). When Siobhan and I attended another event in the spring at the Juliette Low Park in Savannah’s Gordonston neighborhood, we knew we had found the perfect location.
Although a little Spanish moss was unavoidable, we loved that the park looked like it could be anywhere and was less linked to the coastal South than a lot of the locations we use. Though love our live oaks, we wanted a different vibe for this shoot. Luckily the good people of the Gordonston Neighborhood Association were kind enough to let us set up our shoot in the park one afternoon, and the spot couldn’t have been more perfect! With Siobhan’s careful framing, the photographs look like they were taken in the middle of the woods, rather than a suburban neighborhood.
You may be familiar with the woman the park is named for, Juliette Gordon Low, as the founder of the Girl Scouts. The land that today’s Gordonston neighborhood sits on once belonged to the Gordon family and was part of their family farm. You can learn more details about the area and its history from the Gordonston Neighborhood Association’s website.
For the shoot itself, we teamed up with interior designer Stephanie Tallevast and photographer and stylist Kim Daniels. Stephanie handled the set decor, creating a dreamy tent set-up and cozy seating area, while Kim took care of the food (don’t miss her recipes in the issue!) and tablescape.
Be sure to order our fall issue or pick it up from a local stockist to see the full glamping feature! We hope you’ve enjoyed this behind-the-scenes peek. Follow along on Instagram to see what we’re up to for our winter issue!
