Paprika Southern ladies love a spritz, the fizzy mixed cocktails that seem to embody the essence of summer. A good spritz is refreshing and not too strong, making it suitable for sipping any time of the afternoon or evening.
The Technique
With an ingredient list you can count on one hand, without a shaker or precise measurements, think ratio over recipe. Most spritzes, including the original Aperol, follow a one to one formula for each component. One part liquor (such as Aperol or Campari), one part vino (like Prosecco or plain white), and one part seltzer. Citrus twists, olives, and herbs are lovely garnishes, but an unadorned spritz rarely disappoints.

To make the gin hibiscus rose version pictured above, begin by filling your favorite glassware with ice. Start with gin at the base, one to two ounces, or one third of the glass. Add a spoonful of hibiscus flavored simple syrup and give it a swirl to mingle flavors. Then, pour in rosé (both still and sparkling varieties work) until two-thirds of the way full. Top off the rest of the glass with unflavored seltzer water. If you wish, finish with leafy green herb like basil or mint, and enjoy immediately. Be sure to check out the third episode of PS: The Paprika Southern Podcast for even more details on our affinity for spritzes. Cheers!
